Massage Industry Statistics

Dear Friends,

I was recently thumbing through the latest issue of Massage Magazine and thought I would share with you some of the interesting facts and figures that they've compiled from recent data.

The statistics have been formulated using data from the industry's two leading associations, Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP) and the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), as well as from Massage Magazine surveys. Here is a sampling of what they reported: 

• Average annual income for Licensed Massage Therapists (LMTs) in 2007: $20,300
• Number of LMTs in the U.S.: 278,000
• Number of massages performed annually: 230 Million
• Total $$ amount spent on massage per year in the U.S.: More than $11 Billion
• Percentage of adults in the U.S. who had a massage in the past year: 24%
• Of those who had massage, average total number of massages in the year: 7
• Percentage of people seeking massage for relaxation purposes: 22%
• Percentage of people seeking massage for medical or wellness purposes: 30%
• Percentage of people who would like to see massage therapy covered by their insurance: 59%

The data also showed that women are somewhat more likely than men to receive massage (by about a 15% margin), that baby boomers are more likely to receive massages than those under 45, and that younger Americans are more likely to seek massage for managing stress as opposed to medical purposes.
