Prenatal Massage At Home and Postpardum Massage

If you are or have been pregnant, you don't need us to explain that pregnancy puts a lot of stress on the body! Many women have found that massage both before (prenantal massage) and after (postpardum massage) a pregnancy can be incredibly helpful in many ways.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage can help to relieve muscle tension wherever you feel it: the neck, shoulders, back, hips, legs... every woman experiences pregnancy in their own unique way, and an experienced prenatal massage therapist will be able to work with you to address your specific needs, while being mindful to avoid certain techniques and areas where massage is not advised. These include trigger point and deep tissue massage in the upper trapezius area, in the legs, and in the stomach area. Prenatal massage during the first trimester, if done at all, should generally not include deep work. Be sure to consult with your physician and get his or her OK to receive massage during pregnancy.

Postpardum Massage

Postpardum massage can be very helpful in restoring the body's condition after a pregnancy. After carrying so much extra weight for so long and all of the other physical stresses of a pregnancy, the body needs help more than ever. In addition to relieving all of the common aches and pains, massage can also help restore the skin's condition, including in the stomach area. Postpardum massage has fewer contraindication than prenatal massage, since of course there is no danger to the baby at this point. However, it is important to be careful especially during the first month after giving birth to avoid deep work in parts of the legs in case any blood clots have developed. Also, in the case of a Caesarian section (C-section) it is especially important to get the OK from your physician, and avoid work in the stomach area until the area has had time to heal.

Body Well has several licensed and insured therapists on call who have received specialized training in pregnancy massage. We also have discount packages available, which are a good option for this kind of therapy since you may benefit from multiple sessions. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your needs and we will be happy to find a therapist just for you.
