Many people supplement their diet with vitamins, herbs, juices and other health promoting items. In this post I am going to explain few fish oil health benefits. If you had to choose one single nutritional supplement to take, which one would it be? Logically, you would probably choose one that is both highly beneficial to overall health, as well as more difficult to get in sufficient doses with a regular healthy diet.

One such supplement is omega-3 fatty acids – which is commonly taken for fish oil health benefits or flaxseed oil health benefits(both can be found in capsule or liquid form). Every month it seems like yet another study proves how amazingly beneficial these fatty acids are. Indeed, the most widely recognized benefits are for heart health and circulation. But adding fish oil to ones’ diet shows benefits as diverse as improving skin, nails, hair, and warding off the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. It may also reduce inflammation, help with arthritis, improve overall mood while alleviating symptoms of depression and ADD, and improve functioning of the sexual organs. If you are eating salmon and other fish regularly, hoping that will suffice, take note of whether or not your fish was farm raised or wild caught. Studies indicate that farm raised fish has much lower levels of the beneficial fatty acids, and may even cause inflammation rather than alleviate it.

Fish oil supplements are widely available (even at Walgreen’s) and are inexpensive. One thing to look for when purchasing fish oil is whether or not the capsules are enteric coated. This coating causes the capsules to pass through the stomach before opening and being absorbed into the blood stream which provide maximum fish oil health benefits. This has two benefits. First, it virtually eliminates the possibility of getting a fishy taste if you happen to burp from stomach gas (yuk!). Second, the nutrients are absorbed more efficiently in the small intestines.
