If you’ve been injured in a car accident and a doctor has recommended massage therapy, the cost question is probably top of mind. The short answer: in most cases, auto injury massage costs you little or nothing out of pocket. Your auto insurance, through Personal Injury Protection (PIP), Medical Payments coverage (MedPay), or a bodily injury liability claim, typically covers the full cost when a physician prescribes it.
At Body Well, we’ve been handling auto injury massage cases since 2005 and bill insurance directly in 48 states. Most of our patients never pay anything for treatment. The insurance covers it, we handle the billing, and the patient focuses on getting better.
The specifics depend on what type of coverage you carry. Here’s how it works.
What Auto Injury Massage Costs Without Insurance
Without insurance coverage, you’re paying out of pocket. According to an ABMP industry survey, the average 60-minute massage at a clinic runs about $87, with most therapists charging between $60 and $120 per session depending on location and session length.
Those are walk-in clinic rates. Mobile injury massage costs more because the therapist travels directly to your home and the work requires a higher level of clinical skill and experience than a standard relaxation session. That specialized expertise commands higher compensation for the therapist, which is factored into the fee. Every minute billed is hands-on, patient-focused therapy.
Body Well’s auto injury massage rate is $200 per session, a rate that has been virtually unchanged for 20 years, increasing by only $20 during that time. It’s also far less expensive than most billed medical procedures, where patients often face higher charges for a visit lasting just a few minutes.
The bigger issue is frequency. Auto injury rehabilitation requires repeated visits. Patients recovering from whiplash, soft tissue injuries, or chronic pain from a collision often need two to three sessions per week in the early stages. At $200 per session, ten sessions adds up to $2,000 before the treatment plan is even halfway through.

That’s why understanding your insurance coverage matters. Most people searching for auto injury massage already have coverage that will pay for it.

How Auto Insurance Covers Massage After a Car Accident
There are three main ways auto insurance can cover your massage therapy. Which one applies depends on your state, your policy, and who was at fault in the accident.
PIP (Personal Injury Protection)
PIP is the most direct path to getting massage covered. Twelve no-fault states require auto policies to include PIP coverage: Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Utah.
In these states, your own auto insurance pays for reasonable and necessary medical expenses after a crash, regardless of who caused it. When a doctor prescribes massage therapy as part of your treatment, PIP covers it in nearly all of them.
PIP benefit limits vary widely by state:
- Utah requires a minimum of $3,000 in PIP benefits
- Michigan allows drivers to choose coverage up to $500,000 or more
Most states fall somewhere in between. These limits apply to all medical expenses combined (doctor visits, physical therapy, imaging, massage), not just massage alone. As long as you haven’t exhausted your PIP benefits, massage therapy is covered.
Patient cost in PIP states: Some states cover 100% of provider charges, while others may cover 80%. Whether the provider collects the remaining 20% from the injured patient may depend on the provider. Some providers may discount or waive the remaining fee if the financial burden is prohibitive for the patient. This is something worth discussing with your provider prior to starting treatment.
The Florida exception: Florida is the one PIP state where massage therapy is explicitly excluded by statute. Even though Florida drivers carry $10,000 in PIP, massage therapists cannot bill against it. Body Well does not bill auto insurance for massage in Florida because of this law. New York also has legal restrictions that prevent most providers from billing auto insurance for massage therapy, and Body Well does not bill auto injury claims there either.

MedPay (Medical Payments Coverage)
MedPay is an optional add-on available on most auto policies, and it’s common in states that don’t require PIP. It works similarly: it reimburses medical expenses after an accident regardless of fault.
Typical MedPay limits range from $1,000 to $10,000, though some policies go higher. The key advantage is that MedPay carries no deductible or copay. Every dollar of approved treatment is covered until the limit is reached.
MedPay covers massage therapy when prescribed by a doctor, just like PIP. If you have MedPay on your policy, your out-of-pocket cost for auto injury massage is typically nothing up to your coverage limit.
Many drivers carry MedPay without realizing it. Check your auto policy declarations page or call your insurer to confirm.
Bodily Injury Liability (the At-Fault Driver’s Insurance)
If another driver caused the accident, you can file a bodily injury (BI) liability claim against their insurance. BI coverage pays for your reasonable and necessary medical expenses, including massage therapy when prescribed.
The catch with BI claims is timing. Because they involve liability determination, they often take months to settle. Your own PIP or MedPay benefits usually cover treatment costs in the meantime. Once the settlement comes through, massage expenses are reimbursed as part of the total.
Patient cost through BI claims: If the claim is resolved in your favor, massage is covered by the at-fault driver’s insurer at no cost to you. But the process is slower, which is why having your own PIP or MedPay matters for getting treatment started quickly.

What You Need to Get Auto Injury Massage Covered
Auto insurance doesn’t automatically cover massage just because you were in an accident. A few things need to be in place:
- A doctor’s prescription or referral. Your treating physician, chiropractor, or in some states a naturopath must prescribe massage therapy as medically necessary for your injury. Insurers will not pay for massage described as relaxation or wellness.
- A licensed massage therapist. The therapist providing treatment must be licensed in their state. In many states, licensed massage therapists (LMTs) are recognized as healthcare providers and can bill insurers directly.
- Prompt treatment. Some states impose deadlines on when you can begin treatment after an accident. Waiting too long can give insurers grounds to deny coverage. If you’ve been in an accident and think massage might help, look into it sooner rather than later.
- Proper documentation. Your therapist needs to maintain treatment records that meet insurer requirements. Weak documentation is one of the most common reasons insurers deny or reduce massage claims.
At Body Well, we handle all of this. We work directly with your doctor, bill your insurer, and maintain the documentation so the paperwork doesn’t become a barrier to your recovery. We’ve been doing this since 2005.
Why Auto Injury Massage Is Worth Pursuing
Cost concerns keep a lot of accident victims from looking into massage therapy. But massage is one of the more effective treatments for the kinds of injuries car accidents cause: whiplash, muscle spasms, soft tissue damage, reduced range of motion, and chronic tension from bracing during impact.
A CDC survey found that only about 15% of massage users had any form of insurance coverage for their sessions, meaning the vast majority of people pay out of pocket. Auto injury patients are in a different position. If you have PIP, MedPay, or a viable BI claim, your insurance was designed to pay for exactly this kind of treatment.

For most people, the harder part is finding a provider who actually handles insurance-covered massage and knows how to work with auto insurers. That’s what we do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is massage therapy covered by regular health insurance after a car accident?
Usually not. Major medical health insurance covers massage therapy in fewer than 15% of plans, and even then coverage is limited. Auto injury massage is covered through your auto insurance (PIP, MedPay, or a liability claim), not your health plan. Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE also generally do not cover standalone massage therapy. For more details, see our FAQ page.
How many massage sessions does auto insurance pay for?
Auto insurance coverage is limited by dollar amounts, not by number of sessions. A policy with $500,000 in PIP coverage, for example, could cover dozens of massage sessions as long as total medical expenses stay under that cap. Your doctor determines how many sessions are medically necessary, and your insurer pays until the benefit limit is reached.
Can I get an auto injury massage at home?
Yes. In-home massage is allowed under most auto insurance coverage, and for many accident victims it’s the most practical option. Body Well specializes in mobile massage for injury patients, sending licensed and insured therapists directly to your home so you don’t have to travel while recovering.
What if my insurance claim is delayed or disputed?
Insurance billing can be slow, especially with liability claims that take months to resolve. Body Well continues treatment uninterrupted even when insurance payments are delayed or disputed. We absorb the financial risk of billing delays so your recovery isn’t held up by administrative issues. We don’t pause care just because payments are taking longer than expected. Waiting on outstanding billing from the carrier is routine for us.
Does auto insurance cover massage in Florida?
No. Florida state law explicitly excludes massage therapy from PIP benefits. Even though Florida drivers carry $10,000 in PIP coverage, massage therapists cannot bill against it. Body Well does not bill auto insurance for massage in Florida due to this restriction. If you’re in Florida and dealing with an auto injury, your doctor may recommend other covered therapies as alternatives.
Why does auto injury massage cost more than regular massage?
Two factors drive higher fees for auto injury massage. First, mobile providers who travel to your home charge more than clinic locations for the convenience of in-home service. Second, injury rehabilitation requires therapists with a higher level of skill and experience than a standard relaxation massage. That specialized expertise commands higher compensation for the therapist, which is factored into the session fee. The good news is that for most auto injury patients, insurance covers the full cost.
